When I tried to tend to the diabetes my father developed later in life, I thought of that woman’s shaking, pale face.
And when I looked at his limbs – a double amputee, and recognized he was in renal failure, I thought of how he fought for a life, when she could not fight for her own.
And I thought of how in his twilight years, he was experiencing the same discomfort and dis-ease he had so seamlessly kept at bay for everyone else.
But even so, I knew we were lucky, my family. We could afford my father’s insulin. We could afford to do what it took to take care of him.

I was convinced that the only thing I wanted to do, ever, was to write novels. However, my parents, both of whom came from impoverished backgrounds and neither of whom had been to college, took the view that my overactive imagination was an amusing personal quirk that would never pay a mortgage, or secure a pension. I know that the irony strikes with the force of a cartoon anvil, now.
So they hoped that I would take a vocational degree; I wanted to study English Literature. A compromise was reached that in retrospect satisfied nobody, and I went up to study Modern Languages. Hardly had my parents’ car rounded the corner at the end of the road than I ditched German and scuttled off down the Classics corridor.
I cannot remember telling my parents that I was studying Classics; they might well have found out for the first time on graduation day. Of all the subjects on this planet, I think they would have been hard put to name one less useful than Greek mythology when it came to securing the keys to an executive bathroom.
I would like to make it clear, in parenthesis, that I do not blame my parents for their point of view. There is an expiry date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you. What is more, I cannot criticise my parents for hoping that I would never experience poverty. They had been poor themselves, and I have since been poor, and I quite agree with them that it is not an ennobling experience. Poverty entails fear, and stress, and sometimes depression; it means a thousand petty humiliations and hardships. Climbing out of poverty by your own efforts, that is indeed something on which to pride yourself, but poverty itself is romanticised only by fools.

And I realized he doesn't know where the women's room is in his office. So I start looking around for moving boxes, figuring they just moved in, but I don't see any. And so I said, "Did you just move into this office?" And he said, "No, we've been here about a year." And I said, "Are you telling me that I am the only woman to have pitched a deal in this office in a year?" And he looked at me, and he said, "Yeah. Or maybe you're the only one who had to go to the bathroom."So the question is, how are we going to fix this? How do we change these numbers at the top? How do we make this different?

Generally speaking, the advantages of good lectures are various. First they broaden the students knowledge horizon and cultivate interest in different fields. Second, they make the life of the students colorful and enjoyable.
With these merits, lectures are just complementary and subordinate to our school work. If students spend too much time attending lectures, their regular study will be affected and disturbed. So, in my opinion, the students should, on the one hand, do their class work and homework well first, on the other hand, set as more time as possible to attend good lectures which are helpful to our life and study.

it is been incredible to hear so many stories.during the two years prior campaigning, traveling around the country. one of the unique things about this experience, my father was running for president. people would come up to youwherever you were and tell you their stories. with suchtremendous detail, and tell you of their hardest challenges, and share with you things in a way they neither -- never would have.they would never open themselves up to you in the same way theydo during the process of a campaign. now today, being part of this administration. i feel blessed for the candor in which people share their ideas and personal stories. linda and i were together in baltimore just days after the inauguration. we did a roundtable with small business owners, predominantly female, hosted by the national urban league. one of those women who actually i brought her to the white house a few months later is named lisa phillips. she had a small's ness. she told me her storyand i think -- we were all crying. it was so amazing. she started out homeless. she is now engaged. this spring she got her mastersdegree. she has a small but thriving small business and party planning. she is volunteering with homeless youth in baltimore. so this is -- these types of stories forever change you. it is unbelievable to hear the purser variants, the grant, the energy. i know she is going to make an enormous impact not just in her business but her community. we talk about small business, how it is going to grow our economy and benefit american workers, butthe amount of philanthropy being done on the local level by small business is a norm is enormous. i'm sure each of you can share your own stories just about how you are able to give act and you do in such a tremendous way. lisa story was moving to me.

While the percentage of working women has dramatically increased, corporate expectations have remained all-too stagnant.
Today, in the United States, women now comprise 47 percent of the workforce.
In the vast majority of American homes with children, all parents work – and in 40 percent of households, women are the primary breadwinners.
Yet, work environments and social institutions still largely operate on a single-earner mindset, in which one parent – traditionally the mother – stays at home to provide full time care.
All too often, our workplace culture has failed to treat women with appropriate respect. This takes many forms, including harassment, which can never be tolerated.
Traditional and rigid corporate culture also fails working mothers – and fathers – who work long and often wildly unpredictable hours and get little time off.
Too many mothers dread telling their boss they must stay home to take care of a sick child – and many must go back to work just weeks after having a new baby – because they can’t afford not to.
Every day, working parents are forced to make hard but unavoidable choices.

But it also heightens our sense of outrage and speeds up arguments, depriving us of the time and space for careful reflection.
Bombarded with notifications, pressured to respond before the media cycle turns over, we tap out our position – our opposition – in seconds. It’s easy to be against something in fewer than 280 characters. It’s far more difficult to articulate what you are for – and to do it at warp speed.

Today, I am gonna share my first special memory. I explored Vanuatu last August. Vanuatu is a Pacific island adventure far beyond any notions of cruise-ship ports and flashy resorts. Deserted beaches, ancient culture, remote and rugged islands and world-class diving are just a small part of this magnetism of this scattered 80-plus island archipelago.
The capital is Port Vila. It was used to be a British and French colony, so a lot of people speak English and French. Vanuatu is a natural place, the sky is very blue, the sea water is very clear, the local law does not allow any fishing, you can see fish swimming around the sea. The vegetable market is lots of vegetables and fruits that I have not been seen before.
It takes a little time to afford a healthy sense of adventure to truly explore Vanuatu's islands, but it's worth every bit of it. Thank you!

There is a very simple reason: We live on one earth, and this is the only place we can live right now. We can't live in space, we don't have the food growing capacity out there yet for lots of people to survive. If we treat the earth like the city dump it becomes dirty and unlivable. If we treat it well by being eco-conscious, the earth stays a clean place, perfect for living, for ourselves and for our children. We are now living in a highly industrialized world. The expanding industries are providing us with more and more convenience and comfort.

首先，感谢在座的各位老师来参加这次活动，给我们捧场，我代表我们英语组对大家的到来表示衷心的感谢。
我当班主任，又教英语，双重的身份让我有更多的空间、更多的途径去做直接或间接能影响英语教学质量的事，所以下面我就围绕班主任这一角色，谈谈做班主任以及教英语的零零碎碎的感受，大家就当是教育杂谈吧。
教育家苏霍姆林斯基说：“教学与教育的技巧和艺术就在于，要使每一个儿童的力量和可能性发挥出来。”学生学习的力量需要老师的挖掘，借名人名言，所以，我给自己的讲座取了个洋气的题目：《借力·用力·给力》，但所讲的内容却都是土办法，土经验、小招术。有点类似于穿着旗袍，却拿着锄头去干农活。下面我就从借力用力\给力这三个方面来谈谈班主任在学科中的作用发挥。
一、借力：利用班主任角色，借力而教
我主要通过以下三个途径：
1、借班会课，规划目标，给成长借力。
有清晰的目标，生活才能心中有底，知道自己本月做事要点，分得清轻重。目标的制订，目标的执行关系着学习的成败。为此，我利用班会课的时间，让学生制订“每月励志目标”，并交流分享，月末班会课上作一月执行情况反思小结。

2、借“考试挑战赛”，给学习借力。
所谓“考试挑战赛”，其实就是期中、期末考前让学生自己给自己的考试订一成绩目标，然后找到挑战对手，与对方比赛考试成绩。考试前让学生自己定成绩，能激发他们的内在潜能与动力，对他们的积极性复习还是起到一定的促进作用。
3、借助“梦想星搭档”，给学困生借力。
班级里有些学生学习有困难，英语单词拼写、单词背诵难度较大。如果教师一个一个抓落实，不管是时间还是精力总有欠缺。所以我在平时的教学管理中，组建由优秀学生负责结对学困生的帮扶计划，并盗用中央台节目名称，取名叫“梦想星搭档”，每位优秀学生专门负责一位学困生，督促学困生的英语单词拼写与单词背诵，让他们及时去帮助学困生，促使学困生成长。
我的英语学科教学与班主任工作是交叉进行，我不仅扮演一名任课教师，也利用扮演班主任的角色，借班主任之东风，落实英语教学之任务。
二、用力：教育是一份承诺，用心才能用力。
三年一轮回，每一个三年，我都要给自已一个承诺：“家长把孩子交给我，那就是我的家人，不管好他们，怎么说得过去。”英语教学方面，我不敢松懈，一“盯”，二“沟通”，双管齐下，尽力把事做细。
我有以下三种方法。
1、盯住英语学习的要点，把力用到实处。
第一分层把关，紧盯单词落实。
农村孩子平时家长管理学习的时间少，双休日很少有英语补课辅导，所以在学校，教师要把他们盯紧，抓落实。对于盯单词落实，我采用分层把关，过关检查落实的土办法。具体做法为：
课时单词读音过关帮扶检查（组长负责：纠正读音，单词抽背）
课时单词过关听写（教师负责：全班听写）
个别学生听写过关检查（教师负责：不合格学生重新听写）
单元单词过关检测结果展示（组长负责：每单元通过检查后并签名）

第二我注重积累，紧盯阅读训练。
学生每天坚持完成一篇完型与阅读
并且准备了陌生单词·短语积累本
并在期中期末进行优秀单词本展示

第三重视面批，紧盯《作业本》质量。
传统作业本采用流水批改，统一订证。但感觉学生拿到批改本后，只是瞄一眼就置之不理，老师辛辛苦苦的批改，在学生的眼里就是红色的勾与叉，不能化为学生查漏补缺的动力，批改效率不高。初三时，我尝试着用小组负责面批的方式做作业本订证，感觉效果还不错。具体做法是：
把班级学生分为十组，每组四人，教师面批十个小组长《作业本》，当面讲解订证；各小组长按照老师的做法面批三位组员的《作业本》，并讲解订证；单元教学结束后，我在课堂上只做易错题的.订证。
教学本来没有新鲜事，教师唯一要做的只是用心落实知识点，用心把事情做有趣了，吸引学生，把简单的事做细，做持久，这样也就是不简单了。
2、沟通在教育的关键点上，把力用到“心”处。
抓英语知识点的落实很重要，但如果只盯着成绩，忽略师生的沟通，忽视语言的激励，容易缺乏持久的教育力量。教书的同时还是不能忽视情感的沟通。
⑴做好班级学生谈话记录本，让沟通成为习惯。
经常与学生谈话交流，及时发现他们的优缺点，常常鼓励叮咛，让师生情感融洽，亲其师，信其道。（照片）
⑵找准沟通契机，能让学困生从“自我放逐”中醒来。
特殊学生除了要教师的耐心外，还要用“独家秘方”，因人而治。比如我班有个学生叫徐振炎，他上课属迷糊派，下课属好动派。英语作业基本两种状态：要么不做不交；要么乱做，填满空格上交。我除了没事找事，经常找他谈话外，还努力寻找他身上的“防守漏洞”，发现他喜欢运动，就借学校运动会之机让他参加1000米长跑。他跑步时意外摔倒，手、脚、膝盖都血淋淋的，我心痛不已，他却说没事。班会课上，我对他的精神大肆宣扬。此后课堂上，尤其我的英语课上，他比以前投入多了，精力也就不放在“搞破坏”上了。
